Food Moth Infestation Identified During Pest Control Callout
What initially appeared to be a common clothes moth problem turned out to be a very different food moth infestation.
We recently attended a customer’s property after they noticed moth activity in their home. They suspected common clothes moths, but once we carried out a thorough inspection, we were able to identify the real source of the problem.
Identifying the Food Moth Infestation
During our inspection, we identified both Indianmeal moths and merchant grain beetles. These are stored food pests that can infest products such as dried fruit, nuts, cereals, grains and other dried foods.
In this case, the infestation was traced back to food products that the customer had brought home from a recent holiday.
The affected products showed clear signs of pest activity. By carefully inspecting the food and packaging, we were able to identify the source rather than simply treating the moths that were visible around the property.
Correct identification is particularly important with moth problems because different species require different approaches to treatment.
Treating the Stored Food Pests
Once we had established the cause of the food moth infestation, we could carry out the appropriate treatment.
The contaminated products were removed to eliminate the source of the infestation. We then treated the affected areas to tackle the remaining pest activity and help prevent the problem from continuing.
This is a good example of why professional pest identification matters. Treating the property for common clothes moths would not have addressed the actual source of the infestation.
According to the British Pest Control Association’s advice on moths, identifying the species involved is an important part of choosing an appropriate method of control.
